I have landed at Jeddah from Heathrow and from New York for Umrah, and done the Makkah transfer every way there is. This guide covers where to meet a pre-booked driver at Terminal 1, the fixed fares in riyals, dollars and pounds, and how pre-booking works from first message to hotel door.
Jeddah Airport to Makkah taxi, the short answer for US and UK pilgrims
Pre-book a private car before you fly, meet the driver inside Terminal 1 arrivals, and pay a fixed fare of about SAR 250 for a sedan or SAR 300 for a seven seat van when you reach the hotel. The drive is 90 minutes. Nothing about it is difficult once the car is arranged, and everything about it is difficult if it is not.
The Jeddah Airport to Makkah route is about 100 km on a straight, well lit highway. Outside Ramadan and Hajj season, traffic only matters if you land between 5 pm and 8 pm on a weekday.
Arriving at Jeddah Airport Terminal 1
Almost every flight from the US and the UK lands at Terminal 1, the main international terminal. British Airways, Saudia and Virgin from London, and Saudia from New York and Washington all use it. Check your airline’s terminal on the booking a day before you fly, because a few carriers still use the older North Terminal.
From the aircraft to the arrivals hall takes 30 to 60 minutes. Immigration for a tourist eVisa is usually quick outside peak arrivals. Fingerprints and a photo are taken, the passport is stamped, and you go through to baggage claim. An Umrah visa issued through an agent can take longer at the counter, so allow the full hour if that is what you hold.
Baggage claim is on the same level. Trolleys are free. After customs you walk through one set of doors into the public arrivals hall, and that is where the touting starts. Keep one hand on the trolley from this point until you are standing at the car you chose.
Where to meet your Jeddah Airport taxi driver at Terminal 1
A pre-booked driver waits inside the arrivals hall, not at the kerb. When you book, the company sends you a meeting point and the driver sends a WhatsApp message with his name, the car and the plate number. Most drivers hold a sign with the passenger’s name or the company name, and the good ones send a photo of where they are standing.
The usual meeting point is just inside the arrivals hall doors, to one side of the exit from customs, where the driver can see you come through. Some companies use the coffee shop or the information desk as the landmark instead. Whichever it is, it will be in your confirmation, and it is inside the building where it is cool, not in the pickup lane outside where it is not.
Two things make this go smoothly. Turn on your phone’s roaming or buy a SIM before you leave the baggage hall, so the driver’s message reaches you. And send the driver a message when you clear immigration, so he knows you are ten minutes away rather than still in the air.
If nobody is there when you come through, message the company, not the driver. The company can see where the car is and send a second one if it must.

For a family of five from Manchester with seven bags, the Staria at about GBP 61 for the whole car is the number to hold in your head. Split five ways it is about GBP 12 each, door to door, for a 90 minute ride. Compare that with a London airport transfer and it stops feeling expensive.
The official airport taxi rank charges a meter and usually lands in the same range in normal traffic, but with a queue and a car that may not fit the bags. Anyone who approaches you inside the hall quoting SAR 150 is not offering a discount. That number becomes SAR 400 at a petrol station on the highway.
How pre-booking a Jeddah Airport to Makkah taxi works?
Pre-booking is done on WhatsApp in four messages, and you pay nothing until the car is real. Here is what the exchange looks like with Hujjaj Umrah Taxi, which is who I have used on my last three arrivals.

Jeddah Airport to Madinah, if you are going there first
Some US and UK itineraries land at Jeddah and go straight to Madinah, because the return flight leaves from there. The same pre-booking process applies, with one difference. The Jeddah Airport to Medina transfer is 420 km and four and a half hours, so a night landing means a dawn arrival. Ask for one prayer stop on the road and keep water and medication in the cabin rather than in the boot.
