Is It Safe to Take a Taxi in Saudi Arabia? What Western Pilgrims Should Know

Saudi Taxi Safety Guide
Is It Safe to Take a Taxi in Saudi Arabia? What Western Pilgrims Should Know 4

Last March I watched a couple from Manchester stand in Jeddah arrivals for forty minutes, turning down every driver. The wife showed me her phone. A chatbot had told her Saudi taxis were “a risk to assess carefully”.

They got in a car in the end. It was fine.

If you are flying from the US or UK for your first Umrah, you have probably asked the same thing. Here is the answer. Yes, taxis in Saudi Arabia are safe, as long as the car is licensed or pre-booked. I have done seven trips. This is what that means.

Are Taxis Safe in Saudi Arabia for Western Pilgrims?

Yes. Violent crime against passengers is very rare, and women travel alone by taxi every day. The two things that go wrong, an inflated fare or a driver who never arrives, only happen with unlicensed street bookings. A named driver and a fare fixed in writing before you get in remove both.

Which Taxi Is Safest in Saudi Arabia?

A pre-booked licensed company is the safest, because the driver and the fare are on record before you land. Uber and Careem are safe inside the cities, but drivers cancel the 450 km intercity trips once they see them. The official airport rank is licensed and metered, with a long queue and a car that may not fit your bags. A driver who approaches you in the arrivals hall is unlicensed, and the fare he quotes will change on the road.

The car is the same in every case. What differs is whether anyone knows who is driving you, and that is what protects you.

Is It Safe for a Woman to Take a Taxi Alone in Saudi Arabia?

Yes. The rules that once required a male companion no longer apply, and my wife has taken pre-booked cars and Careem rides alone in Makkah and Madinah without a problem.

Sit in the back, which is the local norm. Use an app or a pre-booked car so the driver’s name and plate are on record, and send the plate to family before the car moves.

Is It Safe to Travel by Taxi at Night in Saudi Arabia?

Yes. Most families take the Makkah to Madinah road after Isha, sleep in the car, and arrive before Fajr. The highway is lit and fuel stations stay open all night.

The night risk is a tired driver. Ask the company whether the driver is fresh for the run. A licensed company can promise that. A street driver cannot.

Are the Roads Safe from Jeddah to Makkah and Makkah to Madinah?

The roads are modern, wide and lit. The danger is speed. Saudi Arabia’s high road death rate comes from speeding and lane changes on these highways, so wear the seat belt in the back and tell the driver you are not in a hurry. Drivers speed because passengers reward it.

The Makkah to Medina road is 450 km with a rest area near Rabigh and fuel stations about every 100 km. Ask for two stops.

Taxi Safety Tips for Saudi Arabia

  • Agree the fare for the whole car before the bags go in.
  • Match the plate number on the car to the one the company or app sent you.
  • Keep the hotel name on your phone in English and Arabic.
  • Keep passports, cash and phone on your lap, not in the boot.
  • Put the seat belt on in the back.
  • Refuse any driver who approached you first.

How Is Hujjaj Umrah Taxi the Safest Taxi Service in Saudi Arabia?

Every point above is built into a Hujjaj Umrah Taxi booking, which is why I use it.

  • Every driver is licensed by the Transport General Authority and holds a police clearance certificate, the Saudi equivalent of a UK DBS check or US background check.
  • The fare is fixed per car and sent in writing before you fly. It does not change for a delayed flight, a Zamzam box or a hotel in Aziziyah.
  • No advance payment. You pay the driver in cash or by card at the hotel door.
  • The driver’s name, car and plate arrive by WhatsApp the night before, and the office tracks the flight and the car.
  • Drivers are briefed to keep to the speed limit and stop on request.
  • One booking covers the Jeddah Airport to Makkah transfer, the Madinah road and ziyarat tours in both cities.
  • Miqat stops at Masjid Aisha and Dhul Hulaifah are included free for pilgrims entering ihram.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe to travel through Saudi Arabia right now?

Yes. The country is open to pilgrims and tourists, and the routes between Jeddah, Makkah and Madinah run all year. The only closure to plan around is Hajj season, when Makkah shuts to anyone without a Hajj visa for about six weeks.

Is Uber cheaper than a taxi in Saudi Arabia?

Inside a city, slightly. Uber and Careem charge about SAR 2 to 3 per km with the fare fixed on screen, and a metered taxi lands in the same range. For the airport and intercity legs, a pre-booked fixed fare beats both.

How much is a 5 km taxi ride in Saudi Arabia?

About SAR 15 to 25 on a ride app and SAR 20 to 30 in a metered taxi, roughly USD 4 to 8. Short hops around the Haram fall in this range. Agree the figure first in a car without a meter.

How much does a taxi cost from Makkah to Riyadh?

About SAR 1,500 to 2,500 for the whole car, depending on the vehicle. The road is nearly 900 km and takes eight to nine hours, so most travellers fly or take the train and book a fixed transfer at the other end.
